Patricia Roberts Harris, Howard University law professor, was appointed Ambassador to Luxembourg on this date in 1965. Harris was the first Black woman in the United States to be named an Ambassador. Willy T. Ribbs became the first Black driver to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 on this date in 1991.
