BLACK HISTORY MOMENT This black history moment is a little different than others, for the fact that todays moment will feature a white man. Everyone know the story about how Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation, but who many dont know is Pennsylvania Representative Thaddeus Stevens. Here is the true story of the 13th amendment In 1837, Thaddeus Stevens was the only member to vote against amendments that would exclude blacks from voting. He said he had not expected to hear it maintained “that GOD did not, out of one clay, create all mankind; nor to hear the Holy Scriptures cited as an apology and license for oppression.” I wished that I were the owner of every southern slave, that I might cast off the shackles from their limbs, and witness the rapture which would excite them in the first dance of their freedom. He put enormous pressure on President Lincoln and Congress to pass the 13th amendment. Stevens voted that former slaves were entitled to 40 acres and a mule. During the debates over the 13th amendment he proclaimed I do not hold equality in all things, just equality under the law. When downgrading a bigot. After Thaddeus Stevens died he left his home and money to his African-American housekeeper who he lived with for 20+ years, and paid equally. Thaddeus Stevens stood up for African-Americans when in slaving them was popular, spoke his mind and forced the ending of slavery. Thaddeus Stevens is Black History And this has been your BLACK HISTORY MOMENT tune in again tomorrow at 5:30 to get another installment of BLACK HISTORY
