***BLACKFISH*** 14th NOVEMBER *** 7pm *** Where: Life Centre, University House. As many of you already know, we will be showing Blackfish for all our society members and non-members. The topic is one that is personally very close to my heart and the more people that watch it the better as the message is one that needs to spread. Killer Whales are highly intelligent, sentient animals. They have very strong family bonds; males never leave their Mothers pod and females leave when they are around 20 years old when they are ready to start their own family. Their family bonds are as close as ours are to our own families, so please just imagine now, one of your loved ones being taken from you and then made to live in a prison and perform for people, would you allow that to happen? Would any human allow that to happen? I think we all know that the answer to that would be no. So why then is it okay for humans to tear apart killer whale families? There is no benefit to the animal, the only benefit is to the human who is making money from them. This is what Blackfish explores, you get to see footage from ex-trainers and hear first hand the conditions killer whales are made to live in. SeaWorld and the fight against captivity became very public in 2010 when a third person was killed by SeaWorlds most famous killer whale- Tilikum. Tilikum is used as a sperm donor, he has sired most of the calves at SeaWorld, which would never happen in the wild. What life does he have? He will never feel the ocean, he will never hear the calls from his pod, he will never hunt food for himself or swim 100 miles a day. Instead, he swims laps around a tank, in water filled with chemicals, receiving fish stuffed with vitamins and medications...There is no comparison. When we return wild animals to nature, we merely return to them what was already theirs. For man cannot give wild animals freedom. They can merely take it away. - Jacques Cousteau. There is a small fee of £3 which 50% of it will go to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society who are dedicated to the conservation and welfare of all whales and dolphins. uk.whales.org/ I look forward to seeing you all there and I promise you, watching this film will change your life.
