#BLACKLIVESMATTER Most people have lost their patience with well meaning white people, because yall are ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING in your inability to see yourselves. I am quickly joining the ranks of those who have lost their patience. In case anyone is wondering what I think #blacklivesmatter No one is devaluing the other colors of lives. For those of you who say that we are disregarding the value of the lives of people of color who are not black: I would suggest that you take note on where & how non-black and non-white allies are responding to #blacklivesmatter. So far white allies are the only people who dont seem to get it. The fact that for white people the concept of being an ally in a raced space appears to be more difficult than being an ally in non-raced spaces is another symptom of the way that race and privilege work in this society. If you have ever been an ally to anyone--survivors of rape, LGBTQ fam, immigrants, oppressed people anywhere--as an ally perhaps you are familiar with the process of listening actively, following their lead, and using your voice to amplify the voices of others. When you change the name of this movement whose voice are you amplifying right now? Are speaking for others rather than allowing them to speak for themselves? Are you speaking from a place of privilege? #checkyourassumptions For those of you who say that we are making white people feel uncomfortable or alienating moderates: You would NOT walk into someone elses house and say, I think I like that painting better on this other wall, and then move the painting so that you feel better in their house. That would be rude. Why would you walk into someone elses movement and try to change the name? You need to go sit yourself down somewhere, take a looooong moment. Think about yourself, see if you can spot your privilege. Then think about us, and what is happening to us, try to learn sympathy. Once you get there, try empathy. When you get there you might be ready to be an effective ally. #BLACKLIVESMATTER #checkyourprivilege #Checkyourassumptions #staywoke
