BLESSING: THE BEGINNINGS OF TRYING TO EXPAND MY DEFINITION To only think of blessing in terms of material, or financial stability and success, is to reduce God to some fairy godmother who is terribly selective in choosing who gets and who does not get. I’m weary of saying about these successes, particularly, that ‘I am blessed.’ Rather, I prefer to say: I’m fortunate. I’m privileged, Ive had great advantage and opportunities. Ive had guidance, and really good Guides my whole life long. History has been on my side… This seems to leave open the door of my heart-mind for those who are less fortunate – and less privileged. Those who haven’t had or experienced what Ive had. To say I am blessed by these material privileges and things, narrows blessing, and does it mean that those who do not have them are, somehow less blessed, or, God forbid, not blessed at all? I can’t live with that definition. Surely blessing must be more profound than that? Luke 6: 20 - 26
