BLIND THRIFT SHOP BECOMES A BAKERY. I walked to Mater Hill and found that the Blind Thrift shop was closed down and empty now, and it was up for rent. The Blind Centre were still in their place across the road, so I went to pay a visit to Chris and Alec who were there, Chris’s girlfriend was there also but Blind Eddie and the woman leading him with the guide dog were gone and only came once a week now rather than every day when they used to sleep there before. All the clothing and things were put in storage and rather than having a Thrift Shop costing them lot of money to rent, they will in future have a flea market type of set up once a month with tables in and around the Blind Dance Hall in Vulture Street. Since the Blind Institute own the place, they need not pay any rent to be there one weekend a month, both Saturday and Sunday. If you watch the Blind Dance Hall, you will see it when it comes and free snacks would be available also. That was something new for me. They are going in with the Meals On Wheels he said, Blind Hall dances were on every Friday evening I said. Chris said, starting this week, they will have a table just at the entrance with snacks for everybody, even if you don’t go dancing there but just passing, you can walk in and ask for snacks, but you will see a sign that says HELP YOURSELF and it is all free. You don’t have to pay but you can give a donation if you got any money, they won’t ask you for it. You can drop it into a collection box that will be provided there, go and see. The old thrift shop was closed down for long time and it eventually became a bakery. In Australia they call them Hot Bread Kitchen because bread, buns and cakes are cooked freshly every day, everything must be sold. Anything that is not sold, was put on what we now call the back shelf to one side, the price was reduced and you could buy lot of cheap bread for yourself if you had money to buy it up and stock up your refrigerator with it. Loafs of bread were always good to have because I ate lot of bread and jam while living on the edge as the saying goes.
