BLOG: Matthew’s eyes and ears functioned normally, but because of his severe brain damage, he could not process well what his eyes saw and his ears heard. Immediately, the medical personnel classified him as cortically deaf and blind. That was a tough diagnosis for me to come to grips with, and I never really believed it in its entirety. He always looked at those who held him and would respond to their talking-though at a distance, distinguishing sights and sounds was very difficult for him. He was not able to talk, with the exception of saying “Lion” when asking for his favorite toy. To this day, I do believe that once, as I held him closely, he looked at me and said, “I love you Dad”.
