BLOODY TOES God is at work in the yielded heart, willing and doing of His good pleasure. Saints often kick against the goad, as they discover God’s willing and doing is contrary to their divided heart. Our Lord told Paul “It is hard for you to kick against the goads”, equating vain and rash resistance to God with unruly oxen who are guided by the pricks from a sharply pointed stick. Self does not want to relinquish control of our life to the Holy Spirit. Don’t misunderstand: We want God so we offer up a little plot of heart-ground hoping to appease Him and make us feel good about our Self. But God... you know He wants everything, including that south-forty we keep so will hidden – the place where we go to relax and play. God wants to cultivate all our heart-ground -- clearing the thorns and stony places, plowing the hard packed roadways, and breaking up all the fallow ground -- cultivating the virtues of His nature everywhere... producing godliness... producing righteousness. In submission we learn He is working all the “things” of our life out for our eternal good, in accordance with His purposes. We must learn to trust the Lord with all of our heart-ground, leaning not on our own understanding. Bloody toes provides an object to this lesson...
