BMC pushes ahead with parking policy MUMBAI: The civic body has decided to ram through the new parking policy despite the reservations of several south Mumbai residents. The locals were in for a rude shock when they saw labourers demarcate the slots in yellow outside their buildings on Wednesday. While we are facing stiff resistance from residents, the guidelines will help streamline parking in the area, said a senior BMC official. We have started marking out slots. Plans are afoot to dispatch letters to the residents allaying their doubts and concerns. Currently, the city is plagued by haphazard parking and we are hoping that the policy will help in bringing about some order, he added. M Hemdev, a resident of D Road in Churchgate, said locals were anxious over the new arrangements. Our concern is that we will have to pay an exorbitant price to park on the road. Inhabitants of several buildings in the area have already started a signature campaign to showcase their opposition towards the policy. We are hoping that the BMC will take not of our grievances, said Hemdev. Senior citizens in the area are a worried lot. Vinod Arora, a 74-year-old Churchgate resident, said pensioners were unhappy with an additional burden on their pockets. The civic body needs to be considerate as the policy does not appear to be feasible, said Arora. The BMCs decision to launch its neighbourhood parking scheme from the southernmost tip of the city had upset several residents, especially those living in century-old buildings as most of these do not have parking spaces. The affected residents argue that they should not be penalized retrospectively for something they are not responsible for; instead the BMC should have started the scheme in the suburbs, where several new buildings have come up with parking lots. Many believe it is not practical to implement the scheme from A ward, which encompasses Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Nariman Point, Churchgate, Fort and witnesses tourist footfalls. Moreover, the area has several heritage buildings that do not have parking space.
