BMI No.784: Ruby and Sapphire are scientifically the same mineral but of just different colors. While the red variety is called Ruby, variety of all other colours, especially the blue is called Sapphire. The colour is decided by the impurity mix in the formation of the stone. The parent mineral for both is Corundum which is nothing but extremely hard, crystallized alumina! The word Corundum is from Tamil Kuruntam (குருந்தம்)!
