BMT update #8 Well were moving on up....! Santa brought us the best present he could have!!On Christmas morning Lucas white blood count went up from 40 to 170 !!! (normal range is 5k to 10k). While the numbers dont seem big, it means one thing...THE GRAFT TOOK! His body is using his new stem cells to regenerate new, cancer-free, bone marrow!!! (today his numbers hit 300!). If everything keeps on track, we could leave the hospital by the end of next week. He is doing phenomenal! His C.Diff is all but gone! He had minor mouth pain, three mornings ago, but it was so short lived, we didnt even use Tylenol. (Most kids on day +7-+12 need morphine for pain). To put into perspective how well he is doing, our day nurse on Xmas Eve saw in the chart that Lucas was day +8. She told her supervisor they she needed to have one patient taken off her rounds list, as Lucas will need lots of help today. When she came in Lucas was chatting away and telling her to smell my stinky feet!. She looked at me in disbelief and said most kids on day +8 are just drooling, because it hurts so bad to swallow their spit. (The 3.5 hours of ice I forced him to endure really worked!) Christmas Day! We had a wonderful Christmas together! The good news was there were only three families on the entire floor! So lots of babies got to be home for Christmas! We made the best of it, and the staff was phenomenal! Night crew helped me move presents, and even wrote and printed a good bye letter to Lucas from our elf on the shelf Blinky with beautiful graphics! Lucas had three full garbage bags of gifts delivered from Mommy and I ( he had Santa Christmas earlier in the month), but the coolest gift he received was an electronic drum set that I got him! I however didnt buy it, a very special person got it for him (who will remain nameless until I get permission to use it, then I will shout it from the tree tops, as it was an unbelievably kind gesture that will not be forgotten!) We were so blessed with gifts, I refused to take any donated gifts the hospital received, so the other kids could have them up here. We FaceTimed Mommy, Uma (grandma) Hannah, and Charlie, Grandpa and Grandma Suzo and family, Aunt DiDi and Bertnay (Lucas name for Brittnay) We finished the night by watching The Grinch! All in all, a good time was had by all! Dont be sad we were here, as it is one day closer to ridding him of cancer. There is no better gift then that. Hope yours was great! God bless! Michael
