BNP has condemned the move to ban all rallies and procession in the capital for an indefinite period. “This is how they (government) are taking away people’s democratic rights to speak and protest,’ said the party spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in his immediate reaction to the prohibitory order issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Saturday. BNP had announced a rally on Oct 25 to press for its demand to reinstate the system of holding polls under a non- party caretaker government. Following that Awami League announced that it too will hit the streets of Dhaka on the same day giving rise to fear among the people about the possible backlash among two major political parties. The DMP announcement to enforce the ban comes amid the prevailing uncertainty. “It is like sealing all windows of a room,” said Fakhrul. “The people are being suffocated … no one can speak or protest.” “It’s as if the government is taking Bangladesh to the land of Hirok Raza,” said Fakhrul in a reference to the fictional monarch. The BNP said the move to ban rallies and meetings was contrary to the Prime Minister’s proposal for all- party interim government. “The government has adopted a double-standards policy. The Prime Minister on the one hand is talking about maintaining democracy and proposing a poll-time all-party cabinet, on the other hand her government is depriving people of their democratic rights by enforcing ban on rallies and meetings.”
