BOCH DEVOTIONAL: “Exercising” Anyone who benefits from the word has to put it to use; that is practice the word, train him/herself in the word. When you receive the word and mix it with faith then the practicing starts and this can only be done by speaking the word, thinking the word, seeing the word take course in all aspects of life. This is what Joshua did (Josh 1:8) and the rest of the people on the wall of faith in Heb 11. James makes it clear by reminding you to be a doer of the word (James 1:22) and Jesus had already made the same statement in the course of his ministry. It gets more interesting when you read (1 Tim 4:7-8), there in is instruction not to give attention to profane fables (that would be all manner of conversation which is not profitable) but rather to exercise yourself unto godliness. Let the word become active, think it, speak it, see it. Godliness profits unto all things, whatever you can think about and above all it has a promise of the now life and the life which is to come. Hallelujah! As a New Testament creature, you exercise the word as regards the covenant you received. You do not exercise yourself in the law because it is not yours but rather exercise yourself unto righteousness. The new covenant is basically about receiving, you exercise yourself in receiving; mercy, grace, love, righteousness, holiness etc and after receiving walk in them. (Heb 5:13-14), talks about the young and mature believer. The mature have learnt to use this word of righteousness and have exercised their senses to discern good and evil. The word ‘use’ as in this verse, means that it has become a habit. Confession: Thank you father because I am skilled in the word. I am a doer of the word.
