BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT: Okay, so after many false starts, I can finally reveal the final, set-in-stone release date of my next novel, entitled Under the Wall. The day has great significance for me and this book - December 3rd, 2014. This date marks the five year anniversary of when I first began writing seriously. Not only that, it is the fifth anniversary of when I began writing the very book, Under the Wall, that I will be releasing. But, like my writing, the book has taken some unexpected turns. If you count my unreleased early efforts, in those five years I have written five and a half full novels, three and a half short story collections, and five novellas. Only my more recent work has been up to snuff, and Ive had to go back to a lot of my first releases and clean them up (theres one I still have left to do, Emergent Pattern - so dont buy that until next year if you havent yet!). In releasing (and then rewriting and re-releasing) Through the Woods, my paranormal cat novel, I created something of a conundrum: it is the retconned prequel to two unreleased early novels. Now that it alone is released, and the two novels that it sets up are buried in a vault, it creates a very dissonant ending for its readers. Well, Ive taken those two novels, Under the Wall and Out the Door, and have painstakingly woven them together into something new, along with new strands of story that bind them not only to each other, but to the story of Through the Woods. Its been the hardest fiction work Ive ever done, but I think it is definitely more than the sum of its parts. There was a decent story in those two books, buried in the fluff and waiting to be joined together into one giant feline Frankenstorys monster. Im about to set that monster loose into the world, for good or ill. The date of my choosing is December 3rd, 2014. It has significance to me. It has significance to Leviticus the cat. And, above all, its when this giant sprawling epic of feline phantasmagoria will finally come to a conclusion half a decade in the making. At times, writing about these cats (this will be, technically, my FOURTH novel about these little fellas) has been a bit of a strain. But, as Stephen King said of writing Carrie (not that my book is Carrie, but there -is- a lot of blood in it): Sometimes, youre doing your best work when it feels like youre just shoveling shit from a sitting position. Now that these guys are almost in my rear view mirror, I am starting to hope that maybe thats what Ive been doing for the last year. One things for sure: Ill never forget Deinonychus, and especially little Leviticus. I hope you wont either. Thank you for waiting. That wait is almost up. See you in December. In the snow. Youll be able to find me. Just follow the footprints. Ill be waiting.
