BOOKS: The other day, the book ‘John Dewey and the Lessons of art’ by Philip W. Jackson appeared on Carinas bookshelf. John Dewey, an influential educator, whose mantra (some of you may know it) ‘learning by doing’, is very popular and also misinterpreted by some people. The mantra, if let to stand alone with a sole emphasis on the doing, leaves out the fact that Dewey had a vision and a wish for individuals to learn to reflect and think for themselves. And, an education that would cultivate creative thinking using art, for instance, was the way to develop perceptual sharpness. Dewey said: “In the schools of tomorrow the function of the textbook is changed. It becomes more a guide for the pupil by which he may economize time and mistakes. The teacher and the book are no longer the only instructors; the hands, the eyes, the ears, in fact the whole body, become sources of information, while teacher and textbook become respectively the starter and tester.” Collected works published by Southern Illinois University press, Dewey John and Evelyn Dewey, EP Dutton, 1925.
