BORDER PLAYERS TAKE SCOTTISH PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS BY STORM!!! 12 young under 12 aged badminton players represented 6 schools and the Borders on Saturday, 3rd May, 2014 at the Scottish Schools National Championships held at the Bells Sports Centre in Perth. First up was the Singles tournament where Callum Smith from Greenlaw took the National title with Callum Stokes from Duns Primary taking the B championships. Isaac Weir also played in the Singles getting through to the quarter finals. The cup dating back to 1976 has many well know players on it including Robert Blair Scotland’s commonwealth’s medal hope and Andy Bowman currently Scotland’s Senior assistant National performance coach. This is the first time a boy from the Borders has won this prestigious event and along with his brother Tyler won the doubles event completing a clean sweep of the boys events for Duns Primary school. Callum and Tyler would like to thank their sponsors Ashaway, Berwickshire sports council, Rowan Boland trust and the Russell Hogg Trust. We wish them well in their next tournament an U12 in York on the 10th May. In the girls Iona Fox (Kingsland PS) Jodie Black from Coldingham PS and Amy Kenneally (Duns PS) all got into the A championships with only Jodie getting as far as the quarter finals. In the Level Doubles section the Borders did even better with Jodie Black and partner Indie Lucas also from Coldingham Primary making it to the final of the A Doubles only to take the Runner/up position as did Iona Fox and Jessica Mitchell from Kingsland Primary in the B Championships. The boys, however, went one better to win both Double titles. Firstly, Duncan Crowe (Reston Primary) and Jacob Carter (Coldingham Primary) making it into the A championship sections and then Callum Smith doing the double to take the A Doubles title with his brother Tyler Smith while Aiden Ferrier and Gavin McLaughlin from West Linton Primary took the B Championships. Special thanks to Lynn Young and Claire Purves for the reports.
