BRING IT ON STICK THAT IN YOUR TACO AND SMOKE IT A press conference called Friday afternoon by immigration advocates set a contentious tone for the upcoming session, as they warned the Republican Caucus that they will be organizing against any intentions to draft legislation to add a non-citizen designation on drivers licenses issued to young immigrants known as dreamers. Rep.-elect Jay Lawrence, R-Scottsdale, said he wants to protect the voting system against fraud by drafting the license proposal. A drivers license is one of the acceptable forms of documentation when showing identification at Arizona polling places. Sen.-elect Catherine Miranda said she met with Lawrence to warn him about the pitfalls associated with his plan if he introduces the bill when the Legislature convenes on Jan. 12. My purpose of that was to remind him of the history of Arizona, she said. I proceeded to educate him on the progress we have made in the Legislature. Arizona is still recovering from the controversial 2010 immigration-enforcement law, Senate Bill 1070, she said.
