BOYHOOD (2014) was shot over a 12-year period to show a Texas boy played by Ellar Coltrane aging from 6 to 18, with the rest of the cast (Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as his divorced parents) maturing with him. Written and directed by Richard Linklater, this one is up there with DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993) and the BEFORE trilogy (1995, 2004, 2013) as the filmmakers best work, with the final product feeling accessible and experimental. Linklater employs such a light touch, focusing mostly on the small moments and big questions that define a boys life, not the life or death theatrics we get shoveled on us in other films. Theres no question that rather than rushing to make a schedule, the 12 year production allowed the cast and crew to slow down and find a movie unlike any other Ive seen. As a native Texan, I was also proud to see the state (it was shot in Houston, San Marcos, Austin, Alpine, Study Butte/ Turlingua and Big Bend State Park) utilized for the diverse backlot that it is, not a collection of rednecks, Ford F-150 trucks or country western music. Highly recommended.
