BRAC, which started out as Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance - TopicsExpress

BRAC, which started out as Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee and then as the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee, is the worlds largest NGO in terms of employees and clients. BRAC employs over 100,000 people, roughly 70 percent of whom are women, reaching more than 126 million people. The organization is 70-80% self-funded through a number of commercial enterprises that include a dairy and food project and a chain of retail handicraft stores called Aarong. It was into micro-lending BEFORE the better known (and laudable - no competition implied) Grameen Bank. Both NGOs read as rooted in the socialist idealism that pervaded the early politics of Bangladesh. The State did not have the human infrastructure (both workers and leaders) to pull move their Socialist Theory into successful Praxis (or to overcome the rampant corruption colonialism and imperialism had inculcated in their society). BRAC especially, over the last 4 decades, has made it work, and has spread their model - concentrating on the poorest, and women in particular - around the world.
