BRAD BACKS CAMERON TO SHINE FOR STATES The US Under-20 Men’s National Team takes part in the 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in Jamaica this month with two generations of Spurs players among their travelling party. Not only has promising Academy defender Cameron Carter-Vickers been named in the States’ 20-man playing squad for the tournament, but our experienced first team goalkeeper and Club Ambassador Brad Friedel will form part of their coaching staff. Ahead of his nation’s first game against Guatemala on Friday, January 9, former American international stopper Brad has backed his 17-year-old club-mate to shine on the international stage. “I know a lot about Cameron having coached him, played with him and trained with him here at Spurs,” he said. “He went into the US fold not too long ago. They had him in his own age group and he did really well so they put him in older groups and he’s been extremely impressive. “He’s playing above his age group again out in Jamaica, but physically and mentally I think he can cope with it. “He’s looked very good and I’m delighted he’s playing with the US – hopefully he has a very good tournament for us.” The competition will see four teams qualify for the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand. On his own role, which will see Brad involved on the States’ coaching team under Tab Ramos for the first three matches against Guatemala, Panama (Sunday, January 11) and Aruba (January 14) before returning to Spurs, our popular goalkeeper is thrilled to have the opportunity to impart some of his extensive football knowledge onto the next generation of American talent. “It’s my first time on the coaching staff with any of the US national teams and I’m going to be one of the assistant coaches,” he explained. “I’ve lived over here in the UK for so long but it was fantastic to get the phone call from Tab Ramos – a friend of mine who I played with many moons ago. “I’m looking forward to the experience with some meaningful games coming up. We desperately want to qualify for the World Cup, so I’m very excited. “Football is in my blood so hopefully I can take some of my experience and share that with the boys.” The States face further games against Jamaica (Sunday, January 18) and Trinidad & Tobago (Wednesday, January 21).
