BRAD: We’re very sad to learn that Jay Curley, bass player and founding member of the Illawarra’s mighty Tumbleweed, has unexpectedly passed away. The Gurus would routinely encounter the ‘Weed at shows & festivals around the traps, it was always a kick to bask in the glow of Jay’s perpetual enthusiasm. Time & again he left me with the impression that for him, in that moment, he was at the coolest gig on the planet. We’ve always admired Tumbleweed for their indifference to convention or current trends. They created their own sound, their own community, their own universe. If you were too square to dig it, that was your tough luck. Jay was a formidable player and in many ways, the walking embodiment of his band. A giant curtain of black hair concealing his entire top half, Mosrite bass around his knees. It was as if The Stooges and Blue Cheer had conceived a love child at Sunbury. I’ll miss seeing him on those stages, inside the music, having the time of his life.
