BRAKE FOR WILDLIFE .... The Wildlife and Transport Programme is in Pilanesberg! Wendy has just completed her first day of work in Pilanesberg …. And it has been a really interesting day. Pilanesberg National Park (PNP) is the fourth largest national park in South Africa, the third most frequented by international and national visitors alike, and is managed by North West Parks and Tourism Board. What makes PNP unique is that it exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as Bushveld. Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. Wendy had some fantastic sightings of wildlife as she drove the tourism roads …. And whilst she was busy monitoring the roads for roadkill, she did remember to look up every now and then to enjoy the spectacular scenery and some close wildlife encounters. Sadly, she found 11 dead animals on the road including a terrapin and a Burrowing Asp. There were also a number of frogs, birds and small mammals, which were unfortunately too squashed to identify accurately to species level at this stage. She also spent time with the some of the visitors to the park as they took part in the questionnaire surveys. There were some very interesting responses …. particularly when asked if they had noticed any roadkill in the park. Not a single person had noted the ones that Wendy had found ….. possibly because they were too small, or simply because the visitors were enjoying watching the surrounding wildlife. Thank you to all the visitors who assisted with the questionnaires ….. and don’t forget to send us any roadkill sightings encountered in the park. Thanks to Pilanesberg National Park and Bridgestone SA for supporting the initiative.
