BRCA and Breast Cancer BRCA genes were brought to national - TopicsExpress

BRCA and Breast Cancer BRCA genes were brought to national attention when Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of breast cancer from having this gene. This was her response based on the information she was given. The scariest piece of information thats tossed about is that the gene increases breast cancer risk by 82%. Its important to understand however that before 1940 the BRCA gene imparted only a 42% increase risk of breast cancer. Why the climb from 42 to 82%? Dr Mary King, the scientist who discovered the BRCA gene, cited epigenetics - how we modify our genes by lifestyle - as responsible for the increasing incidence of BRCA-associated breast CA. If doctors understood lifestyle medicine as well as they do the scalpel, wed have a lot less breast cancer and far fewer surgeries.
