BREAKING: ANZ has – without warning to the affected communities – severed its ties with Phnom Penh Sugar after the company suddenly repaid its entire loan. ANZ is now claiming that it has no responsibility to support justice for communities impacted by Phnom Penh Sugar – despite financing the company’s activities since 2010. Phnom Penh Sugar is implicated in land grabs which forced hundreds of families off their land, use of child labour, arbitrary arrests, intimidation of villagers and dangerous working conditions that resulted in worker deaths. Groups working closely with affected communities have concerns that ANZ cutting and running will make people more vulnerable to the abusive practices of Phnom Penh Sugar and less likely to get justice for the human rights violations in which it is involved. ANZ has now left these people high and dry, effectively taking no responsibility for its role in backing land grabs. In April Oxfam released a report which found that Australia’s big four banks are using your money to back companies involved in ripping communities from their land. The impacts of these land grabs on communities are devastating. Lost crops, demolished houses and the threat of violence characterise many of the stories communities tell. Write to your bank and demand that they say no to land grabs oxfam.org.au/banks-and-land-grabs/send-a-message-to-your-bank/
