BREAKING HAPPENING NOW!! IN TOMORROWS PAPERS.. Roy Keane: Sir Alex Ferguson is at fault for Man Utd rot ROY KEANE has blamed Manchester United’s decline this season on Sir Alex Ferguson’s policy of “cutting corners” in the transfer market. Former United captain Keane says the failure to bring in enough top quality players in recent years has finally caught up with the club and has left Ferguson’s successor David Moyes with a huge re-building job. Keane said: “United need five or six players. They’ve kind of cut corners in terms of transfers in the last few years, they’ve not gone out and got the big players and it has just caught up with them this year. “It has maybe surprised everyone how far they’ve slipped behind teams but now it’s a case of rebuilding. If it happens in the summer then instead of being fearful of it, embrace it – it’s exciting. These can be exciting times for United. Get them back to the very top where they belong.” Seventh-placed United go to Arsenal tonight (Wed) in serious danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in nearly two decades and with Moyes coming under increasing pressure to spark an upturn in fortunes. But Keane insists Scotsman Moyes – who was Ferguson’s nominated appointment – needs to be given time to revamp his squad. “The man [Moyes] deserves plenty of time,” he said. “People have been afraid to use the word that there might be ‘rebuilding’ going on but that’s exactly the word I would use.” With their title hopes over and having exited the two domestic cup competitions, Keane does not believe United are good enough to upset the odds and salvage their season by winning the Champions League. “On form at this moment in time you have to say the Champions League is a long way off for Manchester United. Would I fancy them for it? Probably not. But they’re still a threat, they’re still there and, with their big players like Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie back up to speed with their fitness, United will be a dangerous team if they can get their act together over the next month or two.” Former Everton boss Moyes, meanwhile, has rounded on his critics by insisting he is the right man to revive the club’s fortunes. He said: “I was given a six-year contract because it’s a long-term deal here. It was always going to take time. There is rebuilding going on year after year here and we will continue to try to do that. “I know that we’re doing the right job. We’ll do the same things, we’ll make sure things are right – prepare the players well and things will change I have no doubt.” In response to the suggestion that clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Chelsea wouldn’t be as patient as the fans and board have been at Old Trafford, he said: “That’s why the right clubs pick the right managers and the right managers pick the right clubs. “You pick clubs where you know is the right place for you. That’s why I have always hoped and dreamed that Manchester United would come for me and they did in the end.”
