BREAKING NEWS Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce Mark Schwarzer has today (Tuesday) signed a new one-year contract. The former Australian international goalkeeper, who holds his countrys appearance record, joined Chelsea last summer on a free transfer and proved a reliable backup to Petr Cech during the 2013/14 campaign. He made his debut in a Capital One Cup victory at Swindon, and kept his place in that competition for games away to Arsenal and Sunderland. He also started in a Champions League home win against Steaua Bucharest. That was his maiden appearance in Europes top competition, and he was called back into action following injury to Cech in our semi- final first leg against Atletico Madrid, performing admirably to keep a clean sheet, before ending the season between the posts as he covered for the recovering Cech. In total he made 12 starts and one substitute appearance during his first season with the club.
