BREAKING NEWS: THE DETAINED JOURNALIST WAS RELEASED ABOUT AN HOUR AGO The journalist, Mr. Oliver, who was detained in Minna on the directives of the Niger State Government, was released this morning. He is expected to travel back to Delta State immediately to reunite with his family. I have been following this case with active professional interest. At this moment, I would like to congratulate Mr. Oliver for his courage. I also congratulate his wife, a very brave woman, who had stayed in touch with my office as we monitored that case, and as she fought so gallantly for her husbands release. We further congratulate the counsel on the ground in Minna for his work. Special congratulations will go to Mr. Inibehe Effiong, who has shown extraordinary loyalty and friendship to the detained journalist, while at the same time demonstrating beyond doubt that he is a passionate defender of human freedom and rights. I expect to meet with Mr. Oliver fairly soon to ascertain the details of the facts of his abduction by the SSS, his detention and release. While we celebrate his freedom, the circumstances of his release confirmed the wide-held view that he was an innocent man being intimidated and persecuted under the colour of law. I shall refrain from saying more at this point until after my forthcoming meeting with Mr. Oliver.
