BREAKING: Sparrows Point defeated two-time defending state champion Manchester Valley 2-1 in the Class 1A girls soccer state semifinals on Saturday at North County High School in Glen Burnie. Kacie Lambert scored off an assist from Jamie Shiflett three minutes into the game to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead. Autumn Ciarpella scored off an assist from Mackenzie Smythe 20 minutes into the game and Sparrows Point led 2-0 at halftime. The Mavericks scored on a penalty kick with 16 minutes remaining, but the Pointers got several good stops from goalkeeper Maddie Anthony to preserve the win. Sparrows Point will face Smithsburg for the Class 1A state championship at UMBC. The day and time had not been determined as of Sunday.
