BRIDES: Ive given this advice to many of my brides and I thought Id share it with all of you - again. If you are getting married and want some structure and organization to your day, then it is imperative that you hire professionals that understand that time is FINITE on a wedding day. Once it is gone, it is gone. When Im watching a makeup or hair stylist chat with my bride and show no sense of urgency when shes running 30 minutes late, this frustrates me. On one of my recent weddings the makeup artist said, Its your day, they cant start without you. Thats true. BUT, the photographer cant start without the bride either. There is a limited amount of time before the wedding where pictures can be taken. If I average 100 shots an hour, this means that makeup artist just burned 50 shots up, or $250 for the 30 minutes of time. What would happen if the photographer arrived 30 minutes or an hour late? Yea.. So here are some tips to ensure that you can outsmart your makeup and hair people who run on their own timelines and refuse to honor yours: 1.) Dont get your hair and makeup done last. You will not be any fresher when youre taking your pictures with the groom after the ceremony. Furthermore, if your makeup wont last until the reception, then get someone who can ensure you look good until then. Your makeup needs to at least last until your couple pics after the ceremony. 2.) Factor in a chance for error. Things go wrong on wedding day. But you can take some precautions to minimize the risk. Hair is not an exact science. Any of you who have had a bad hair day one day and then had a great one the next can attest to the finicky nature of your hair. Knowing this, lets say that the hair stylist takes 3-5 minutes longer on your bridesmaids than originally planned. (When youve been late getting somewhere because of your hair taking 20 minutes longer than planned you get this!) You have 7 bridesmaids. That equals 35 minutes late by the time she gets to you! Now whose hair will she rush on? Yours. Also, the photographer is photographing your bridesmaids while youre still getting ready. He/She could be photographing you for your bridals, you with your family, etc. YOU go first. Let the stylist rush on a bridesmaids hair. That way you can be taking pictures with your family and when the bridesmaid is done you can be photographed with her. Remember, its your day, and nothing can start without you. (Especially pics that include you! Like family pictures, pics with your bridesmaids and your bridals!) 3.) Be your own advocate. Ive mentioned things to my brides before about running late, etc. and NOBODY wants to hear that on wedding day - especially from me. The only thing people want to hear is that everything is perfect. And I dont want to be the bearer of bad news. The bad news is that there are certain conditions when you sort of have to stop taking pictures. (i.e. everyone is arriving at the church and you dont want to be seen by everyone). If you feel that your makeup and hair are starting to run late, you are the boss, you are the queen, turn to them and let them know that they have a deadline to hit. That you hired them because of their ability to perform under a deadline and meet that deadline. Let them know this is not ok. So many brides have watched a makeup artist chit chat, joke with the girls, eat snacks, text, etc. all while running behind. *Ill revise this post a little later and add some more to it, but this is the gist of my thoughts. If you know of a bride getting married soon, or you are a bride - allow some time for your photographer to be creative and provide some visually stunning shots of you.
