BRIDGE FAILURE #3: The proposed bridge must be as short as possible (cost and access reasons) but most of all LEVEL: at the entry and exit points, ie at the point where the A5 is the same as the A539. There can be no steps at either end because mobility scooters and people with walking difficulties cannot use them. Unlike the to-be-restored Chain Bridge, cost circa £500,000 this bridge will have to be a solid construction with footings on both banks and mid-river. Guesstimated cost now exceeding £1,000,000. Specialist construction techniques and materials will be needed to work in deep, powerful water. Considerable groundwork will be necessary for cranes, materials and construction equipment such as bulldozers and JCBs and site offices and on both banks. Construction would be limited to Summer to avoid the Spring and Autumn salmon spawning and Winter generally makes such work impossible. Work would have to be undertaken at the height of the tourist season, incurring frequent and length single-lane restriction as traffic enters and leaves Llangollen. The A5 bridge point lies just inside the Town Boundary and paved only on one side, so unless the crossing at the bottom of Brook Street is used, another crossing will be needed along with greater speed enforcement as drivers habitually start decelerating after the 30mph limit is signposted. if they observe the legal limit at all.
