BRIEF REVIEW OF LUCY: What can I say about Lucy? It was bad. Like really bad. Ill try not to deliver any major spoilers here but if you are interested in this film you might not want to read my impressions of it... though I must say I cannot recommend this movie for the theater goer. I would say it might be watchable if it was for free on netflix or something and there was absolutely nothing else interesting to watch. Read on if you dare. The whole premise of the film resting on this totally unscientific using only 10 percent of your brain thing would have been forgivable if it hadnt been BUILT INTO THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE OF THE PLOT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MOVIE. they keep showing you titles that say: 10%, then 20%, and so on as the film progresses. I eventually started reading this numerical countdown as a marker for how much of the film had gone by, wishing for it to come to a close. The movie had some decent visual effects and whatnot, although much of these visuals were highly derivative of other better science fiction action romps. The dialogue was frequently absurdly bad, and badly absurd. This was a film that tried to say a lot, wanted to have something to say, and did a poor job of it. I walked into the movie with low expectations and still ended up disappointed. One aspect of the movie that was somewhat successful was how it tried to thematically and visually represent and explore issues of transhumanism or a transition to a post-human condition, and I will say that I am glad to see these issues getting attention in the mainstream, but they deserve better treatment than this. I would say this movie was as bad as TRANSCENDENCE was, although that movie was more coherent than this film was in some ways, and LUCY was maybe more exciting visually, and in terms of having more action sequences and whatnot. But they were both poor representations of these kinds of ideas. All in all, one could possibly enjoy this movie if you completely disregard the preposterously bad science aspect of it and the terrible stilted dialogue. But I was unable to do so and thus my disbelief was never suspended enough to get into it. I wanted to like it, but I cannot recommend it.
