BSA GRADS RUN 1-2 IN DERBY Former Emperors Palace National Sale graduate, Legislate, scored a sparkling victory in Saturday’s Gr1 Investec Cape Derby. The David and Gail Evans owned colt came with a storming late run to win the 2000m classic by a length from hot-favourite, Captain America, a length and a quarter away in third. SIlvano colt, Arion – like the winner trained by Justin Snaith, was another length and a half further back in third place. Legislate, runner up previously in both the Gr2 Selangor Cup and Gr3 Cape Classic, produced a devastating turn of foot to steal a march on the favourite, after Counts Rocket broke clear of his field to set a scorching pace in the R1 000 000 race. Richard Fourie rode the Justin Snaith trained colt, Legislate, perfectly, and timed his mount’s run with great precision. The 2014 Gr1 Investec Cape Derby was a triumph for graduates of the 2012 Emperors Palace National Sale – with both the winner, Legislate, and runner up, Captain America, having been sold at that sale. Bred by the Cheveley Stud, Legislate (whom his trainer had fancied to win the Grand Parade Cape Guineas) was a R100 000 buy at the 2012 National Sale. Now a two time winner, Legislate, who has now won over R780 000 in prize money, is clearly among the best of his generation. By Horse Of The Year and leading sire Dynasty (who had a treble on Met day), Legislate is out of the useful Restructure mare, Champers, who won four times. Champers, who is out of the Gr1 placed Jungle Cove mare Classy Play, is a full-sister to ten time winner Asprey, and a half-sister to three further black type horses – including Gr2 Merchants winner, Black Skimmer. The 2014 Investec Cape Derby hero has a full-sister entered on the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale – and this filly is sure to be a show stopper.
