BTCC drivers take to the Classic Today was the Qualifying day at the Silverstone Classic and some of the current and past BTCC drivers took to the track. Mat Jackson was the first BTCC driver to take to the track; he is racing a Lotus Cortina in the Sir John Whitmore Trophy for Under 2 Litre Touring Cars. Unfortunately the car which he shares with Henry Mann only completed one lap, so he will have to start from fifty-first place in tomorrow’s race. Meanwhile, ex-BTCC racer and WTCC-Champion Andy Priaulx qualified in place in a BMW 1800 which he shares with Richard Solomons. Another ex-BTCC racer was out in the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for Pre 1956 Sportscars was Anthony Reid. Reid qualified seventh in a Jaguar C-Type which he shares with Nigel Webb. Reid also qualified ninth for the Stirling Moss Trophy for Pre 1961 Sportscars in his Jaguar D-Type. Meanwhile, Reid was back out in the Piper Heidseck International Trophy for Pre ’66 GT Cars driving a Jaguar E-Type this time which he shared with Nigel Webb, they qualified ninth. Yet another ex-BTCC driver and the current WTCC champion Rob Huff was out in the Trans-Atlantic Touring Car Trophy. Huff, who was sharing the car with Desmond Smail, qualified the Austin Mini Cooper S in fourteenth place and the third Mini. The big race for Touring car fans is the Super Touring Car Trophy which mainly caters for Super Touring cars. It was ex-BTCC racer, who raced in period, Patrick Watts who put his Peugeot 406 on pole position by just 0.07 seconds ahead of Honda Accord regular Stewart Whyte. BTCC commentator and 1992 champion Tim Harvey put Paul Smith’s Ford Sierra RS500 in fourth position. The only current BTCC driver on circuit was Frank Wrathall who qualified seventh in a Vauxhall Cavalier. Meanwhile, ex-BTCC man Martin Johnson put a little Honda Civic twenty-fifth on the grid. Ex-BTCC racer and Father of Andy, Mike Jordan was out in the FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars driving a Ford GT40 with Philip Walker. Jordan put the glorious machine in twenty-first on the grid in a massive fifty-two car field! Another famous ex-BTCC driver on circuit was Steve Soper, who was making his return to racing; he was sharing David Cuff’s Ford GT40. The pairing qualified thirtieth. Also, Speedworks team boss Christian Dick was out in a Chevrolet Corvette driving with Neil Merry, they went thirty-sixth quickest but on top in class. Reid was back out in this session also; he was sharing a Chevron B16 with Roderick Smith. Reid was the quickest BTCC star in fourteenth position. Written by Joshua Barrett
