BTW Get ready to vote districts for the Eastside school districts - TopicsExpress

BTW Get ready to vote districts for the Eastside school districts trustee (board?) seats in November. Why? Well we imagine its because of all that mishandling of minority votes. Guess this mean Lancaster is guilty of racism? Isnt that ultimately rexs claims against Palmdale elections? Or was it not necessary all along? Has the whole thing been an inside joke? The Lancaster Eastside school district, per this article, Doesnt seem to have ANY reason for making this change. So whats real and what isnt? And if rex can make our school boards change EVERYTHING, why hasnt he changed Lancaster elections to November? Like we voted for? He said on a radio show back in 2011 that it would inconvenience the setting council. Yet he can inconvenience everyone else? What a guy! =============================== Eastsides by-trustee area voting to start in autumn By: Julie Drake LANCASTER - Eastside Union School District trustees Peggy Foster and Joseph Joe Pincetichs seats come up for election in November. But for the first time in the districts history, only those people who live within the geographic boundaries of each trustees district will be able to vote for the candidates. The Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization on Jan. 7 unanimously approved Eastside Union School Districts petition to establish trustee areas and trustee area voting in the district beginning with the Nov. 3 election. ====================================== The school board last June 23 approved a recommendation for the L.A. County Committee on School District Organization to approve the establishment of trustee areas and the adoption of a trustee area election system beginning with Novembers election. Committee members then held a public hearing in the districts boardroom on Oct. 15 that drew no public comments either for or against the proposal. The 240-square-mile district is now divided into five geographic areas, one for each board seat, and trustees will be elected only by voters inside their geographic areas. The school board approved boundaries with areas for the current incumbents that do not overlap. Foster, who serves as the boards clerk, lives in Area No. 2, which begins at 20th Street East to the west and continues to 30th Street East to the east, Avenue K to the south and Ranch Club Drive to the north. Pincetich lives in Area No. 4, which borders 20th Street East to the west, 27th, 30th and 35th streets east to the east, Lancaster Boulevard to the south and Avenue H to the north. The other three trustee seats will be up for election in November 2017. Board member Doretta Thompson lives in Area 1, bordered to the west at 20th and 30th streets east, with a northern border at Avenue J and the southern and eastern borders extending to the districts boundaries. Board President Martha Johnson is in Area No. 5, which has a western boundary at parts of 27th, 30th and 35th streets east, with a southern boundary at Avenue J and eastern and northern boundaries that continue to the districts boundaries. Board member Janette Crawford lives in Area No. 3, which borders Ranch Club Drive to the south, Lancaster Boulevard and Newgrove Street to the north, 27th and 30th streets east to the east, and 20th Street East to the west. Eastsides governing board moved forward with establishing the by-trustee-area election system after attorney Kevin Shenkman sued the City of Palmdale and Lancaster School District under the Voting Rights Act that the entities at-large elections diluted the voting power of racial and ethnic minorities. Lancaster School District, rather than face a lengthy and costly court fight, resolved its case through a no-fault mutual settlement. The terms of the agreement, including the amount of the settlement, were not disclosed. (Like that do you? YOU paid out a settlement to rexs lawyer buddy, BUT YOU ARENT ALLOWED TO KNOW HOW MUCH IT COST YOU! Neat trick, eh?) Shenkman sent a letter to Eastside Union School District in December 2013 accusing the district of violating the states Voting Rights Act. =========================================== Feedback and support from the districts community and stakeholder groups was invaluable throughout this journey, which began over one year ago when the board proactively initiated the transition process from an at-large to a trustee area elections system. Marshall said in a statement. (But wait, it was just reported a few paragraphs up Committee members then held a public hearing in the districts boardroom on Oct. 15 that drew no public comments either for or against the proposal. So maybe the public wasnt a part of all that stakeholder input?) Although there was no statistical evidence of racially polarized voting within the district, this transition will preserve the districts limited resources for student programs, which has always been the boards utmost priority. (But if we dont pay the ransom......) Four Los Angeles County school districts have changed to a by-trustee area election system including Eastside Union School District for nine total school districts with trustee areas. Eastside and ABC Unified School District will have their trustee-area elections in November. (But not Lancaster or Westside? Why you picking on the heavily minority populated Eastside?) Three districts have pending petitions before the L.A. County Committee on School District Organization, and three petitions are expected to be received in the near future, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Office of Education wrote in an email. (Lancaster? Eastside? Why wouldnt the AV Press clarify as such?) jdrake@avpress
