BUAI BAN LEADS TO GRANDMOTHERS DEATH By Samuel RAITANO An old woman from the Central Province was killed yesterday evening at Hohola in Port Moresby when she was chased by NCD police who enforce betel nut ban. Veronica Meni from Kosipe village in Goilala, was hit by speeding PMV bus just near the PNG Power Headquarters as she was trying to cross the road to escape police. Eye witnesses said, the police officers saw her being hit by the bus but drove off instead of assisting. The grandmother suffered from broken legs and neck and died at the scene minutes after she was hit. According to eye witness and PNG POWER worker, Ais Pirisa, the policemen had grabbed money and other sales items at the market beside the headquarters and the old woman fled because it was a norm of the law enforcers to grab money as well from vendors even if they were not in possession of betel nut. “ Ol tu wok long kisim buai na salim gen. (they also confiscate betel nut from vendors and sell them again),” said Mr Pirisa. Meanwhile two other women who were apprehended and taken to the lockup in Boroko have alleged that one officer told them to contact him if they wanted to buy betel nut. He even told them to sell them secretly and that he would return any time to collect a few money at times. “Yupla ol police mas askim yupla yet hao na buai istap yet long City. Gordons Police Barracks em retail blo buai ya yumi olgeta save. Ol Police boss tu save tasol oli haitim stap (You police should ask yourselves how betel nut is still ending up in the city. Everybody knows that Gordons Police Barracks is the retail outlet for betelnut. Even bosses know but have been hiding it),” said the daughter of the deceased old woman. Meanwhile in Gordons a youth was also hit by a vehicle yesterday in a similar circumstance.
