BUD POWELL (1924-1966) was born on this date. Bud was a musical genius, a virtuoso pianist who revolutionized the role of the piano in modern jazz. He was revered by all of the young pianists who came up in the 1940s and 50s, but his career was marred by metal illness and personal problems. When Bud was on he was brilliant, but many of his recordings suffer from a lackadaisical approach and a lack of focus. Here he is in 1962, with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass) and Jorn Elniff (drums), performing a bebop classic written by Dizzy Gillespie.
