Evidence that you have career capital • What differentiates you from others is obvious • You are considered ‘’indispensable’’ in your organization • You have a big network of high value contacts • You have highly sought after skills and abilities • You have influence over decisions at work • You have high credibility with colleagues and peers • You are recognized for ability to adapt/learning new things Developing career capital 1. Start with your career goals What do you want to achieve? How quickly do you wish to achieve them? What are ‘’must have’’ abilities and the ones that would accelerate your progress? 2. Identify your ‘’differentiator’’ What skills do you have that are unique or rare? What are you brilliant at that others don’t find easy to do? Through deliberate practice, become a ‘master’ at these so that you can dominate in this area. 3. Speed up your personal value creation Ask yourself questions about what kind of career success you are looking for so that you can work towards attracting such opportunities. Get networking, retrain if you have to. Find a mentor who will truly challenge you so that you grow quickly and have more opportunity and choice. 4. Prove your mettle Strive to tackle ambitious projects. If you simply work hard you’ll stop getting better. Identify a stretch goal from time to time; a goal based on something you’re not quite able to do yet and push yourself to get there. 5. Marketing yourself Make a list of your best qualities; assess what you do best and emphasize those. Point out to others the great things you do and why those things matter. Join professional networks where you can be visible but also ask questions. Watch what you post on social media and ensure it enhances how you wish to be seen. 6. Have an ongoing career refreshing plan Take stock regularly to confirm that you are ‘’on track’’ in terms of how quickly you are progressing towards your longer term career and professional goals.
