BUILDING THE ARMY FROM THE SCRATCH: A BRIEF SYNOPSIS TO ALL REASONABLE NAFSTSITES (UNIUYO CHAPTER) By Comrd. Jones Solomon Seldom, if ever, do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all of the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would be engaged in little else in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine goodwill and your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I would like to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms~Martin Luther King jnr. I have watched closely the reactions, suspense, drama and the creation of tension which the last congress has aroused. On this note, I want to say that I am not afraid of the word tension , believing that it is a constructive non-violent tension that is necessary for growth and progress. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Just as socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, we must see the need of having non-violent genuine-motions that will help transmogrify Food Science and Technology Students Association to her expected el dorado. We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. BEHIND THE SCENE AND THE PRE-NAFSTS EVENT:Correct and Right comparative perspective. For a new tenure to start every second semester could be correct, for the President to perform handing over rites with NYSC UNIFORM or after graduation could be correct but all not right. For something to be correct does not conote that it is right. A correct thing could be regarded as an accepted standard of behaviour while Right means straight not bent, complying with justice, just and true.This differences between Correct and Right led to a closed door meeting that was held on the 2nd week of May,2014 at the M2 hostel common room between the level500 stakeholders and the defunct President. Having realised the fact that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, lingering issues such as transition of power and the way forward of the association was discussed and resolved. Since the modus operandi was carefully set on:1.Collection of facts: Getting to know why the election was not done(There was no reason. His response was soon. No date, no time) 2. Negotiation: We reminded him of his promises before assuming office, that he will perform election immediately when school resumes.Now more than half of the semester is gone. 3. Self purification: We gave him time but he hasnt complied. Our conscience is justified. 4. Direct action:The congress men and women unanimously accepted the motion to dissolve the executive, reasons being that: He has refused to conduct the election has he promised, He has graduated(Expiration of studentship),To have a correct tenure system(i.e Handing over should be done at the end of every 2nd semester). Remember, leadership is a continum. Finally, in George Orwell story, shooting the elephant(1936) experience, I will boldly say that the drastic decision at the congress was not because of hatred, egocentricity, eagerness or tasty of power. However, shooting the elephant was necessary inorder to effect changes, redirect our route from the correct path to the right path, set pace for generations to come, proper accountability and financial statement at the end of the tenure; above all, create a lasting bond of peace and unity. Ultimately, it was the voice of change-minded comrades. It is my utmost prayer that the labour of our NAFSTS heroes past and dreams shall never be in vain. Amen. Aluta continua!!!! Victoria acerta!!!
