BULLETT RAJA: MOVIE REVIEW Question: Why was this movie made? Answer: Not the first damn clue. Guesses: Maybe Tigmanshu Dhulia wanted to execute his new found big budget and A-list stars or maybe Saif just wanted to contribute in the current Esprit De Corps of Hindi films to make loud and senseless movies packaged as Masala-no-brainer entertainers Whatever be the reasons, the end result is an extremely random film that gets more things wrong than right. The movie changes its ambition as unpredictably as the length, style and color of Saifs hair(wink from Salman Khan). Raja Mishra(Saif Ali Khan) and Rudra Pratap Singh(Jimmy Shergill) meet at a wedding and after a few drinks, between an extremely idiotic song(make that item song, featuring Mahie Gill) and a few hundred bullets later become best of friends. Some random circumstances later, they are reluctantly forced to become gangsters and a few minutes later they are Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid(Tigmanshu did say in an interview that movie changed his life) of U.P. The rest of the story is equally random and hence Ill randomly just skip that part. The story, screenplay even the editing appears to be thought in parts and so does the outcome which is extremely patchy. Tigmanshu provides some good dialogues which are somewhat restricted to his brand of cinema and it makes me extremely uncomfortable to see that those well written lines are in a movie that doesnt quite share the spirit. Among actors, Saif Ali Khan puts in a half-hearted effort, never quite becoming the part like he did as Langda Tyagi in Omkara or Sameer in Dil Chahata Hai. The writing no doubt is shoddy but Saifs lack of spirit is equally disconcerting to the character. Jimmy Shergill on the other hand jumps in with enthusiasm and exhibits earnestness in his role. Sonakshi Sinha is a prop. Vidyat Jamwal appears later in the second half and provides some relief and fun with his, now famous, martial arts skills. Jamwal has a screen presence and he makes sure it is felt here too. Ravi Kishan has a note worthy presence and other regulars like Raj Babbar and Gulshan Grover do what seasoned actors are expected to do. One of the most amusing aspects of the film which I couldnt help but notice and you would too, should you choose to watch it(really, would you still?) is that despite all the unusual bullets flying in the city, the people around go about their jobs without even batting an eyelid and the well behaved bullets dont ever hit a stray target. In one particular scene where Saif jumps out of a window shattering a window pane in the process, the crowd claps while the bullets are still hitting the ground close to their feet, I was even expecting one of them to yawn, hell, I did. After all the bullets have been fired and all the lock and loads have been done, there is no denying of the fact that, Tigmanshu Dhulia has given us some good movies(Haasil, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster and more recently Paan Singh Tomar) and this is certainly not the kind of cinema that we would want to associate with a director of his calibre and sensibility. He deserves better and so do we as audience. 2/5
