BULLYING STATISTICS Research and Statistics on the Prevalence of Bullying Studies, research and surveys over the last number of years indicate the prevalence and severe impact of bullying in Ireland. Childline In 2011, Childline phone service received 10,722 calls from children and young people in relation to Bullying. These children present as being helpless, not knowing what to do; they are afraid to tell due to the fear they have that the bullying may get worse. The ISPCC’s 2011 National Children’s Consultation survey involving over 18,000 young people showed that: 1. 26% of respondents from secondary schools said they or someone they knew had been bullied 2. 22% of respondents from the primary group said that they or someone they knew had experienced b ullying 3. Over half of the young people stated that they would not tell anyone about bullying because they would be afraid that it would make the bullying worse Growing Up in Ireland – The Lives of 9 - Year - Olds 1. 40% of 9 - year - olds reported being a victim of bullying in the past year, and boys and girls experienced similar rates of victimisation 2. A large proportion of the children’s mothers were unaware of their children’s experiences of bullying. Although 40% of children reported that they were the victim of bullying only 23% of their mothers reported this to be the case
