Unfortunately, this bill did not reach the Senate floor this legislative session. I have been a cosponsor of GENDA since I first joined the legislature and i share your support for this important legislation. I firmly support GENDA because I believe that individuals who identity as transgender or who do not conform to the gender binary should be entitled to equal opportunities, in relation to employment, housing, and public accommodations. Sadly though, it has become all too common for many of our citizens to cultivate climates of hostility and distrust. In many cases this climate escalates into physical violence against those whose gender identity or expression is not that of the “accepted norm”. The purpose of this bill is to ensure that all individuals who live in our communities will be able to conduct their own lives as they see fit without facing such discrimination and violence in their daily lives. The passage of this bill is essential to providing legal recognition and protections for transgender individuals and to illustrate that discrimination and physical violence waged based on gender identity or expression will not be tolerated. Thank you again for your continuous support for GENDA and for sharing your personal stories and experiences with me. I will continue to educate my colleagues about the importance of this bill in order to to bring this legislation to the Senate floor for a vote in the next legislative session.
