BURGLARY ON CHRISTMAS MORNING – 1 ARRESTED Just before dawn, around 6:30am on this Christmas morning, South Lake Tahoe Police officers were called to a residence in the 3100 block of Fresno Avenue in response to a burglary which had just occurred. Several visitors from foreign countries are staying in a large vacation residence here for Christmas. In the darkness, a suspect made entry through a second story sliding glass door. Residents awoke to find the thief rummaging through their personal belongings and confronted him. The suspect ran out of the front door of the residence with items of their stolen property. The burglar fell in the snow just outside the entrance and dropped a folding knife with blade of about 4”. The suspect had not brandished the knife at any of the victims during the crime. The suspect was gone when officers arrived. Officers gathered a description of the burglar and set up a perimeter around the neighborhood with the assistance of El Dorado County Sheriff’s Deputies. While establishing their initial perimeter, officers saw a subject in dark clothing running through the neighborhood, away from the victim residence. As it was still dark, this suspect was not found immediately. As the search continued, officers heard yelling from a nearby neighborhood street and discovered a victim who had been chasing a man matching the burglary suspect description, who had just attempted to steal property from his parked vehicle. This man could not identify the suspect’s face. Shortly afterward, an officer discovered and detained a person matching the suspect’s description on a nearby street. Victims from the residential burglary responded to this location and positively identified the detained man as the burglar. Officers were able to identify the suspect as 24 year old Daniel Vega, a South Lake Tahoe resident who lives on only a few blocks from the victim residence. He denied any involvement in the burglary. Vega was booked into the El Dorado County Jail on a felony charge of first degree residential burglary. We are asking for the public’s assistance to help locate the outstanding stolen property from this burglary and from other potential thefts. Information, which cannot be released here without jeopardizing the investigation, indicates that other unidentified suspects may be involved. It appears that contemporaneous in time to the residential burglary, the suspect(s) were attempting to steal property from unlocked vehicles in the neighborhood. In areas near the victim residence, investigating officers have located property, suspected to be from parked vehicles. These items do not belong to the residents of Fresno Avenue residential burglary. Officers anticipate more crimes may have been committed, which are yet undiscovered and may be connected to the same suspect(s). We are looking for a Mac laptop computer with several stickers displayed on it, and a lady’s purse with ID, Indian currency and its full contents; this purse is described as brown & gray with a strap. If you have information, you are encouraged to contact the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 530-542-6100 or Lake Tahoe Secret Witness at 530-541-6800.
