BUST YOUR FOOD BILLS WITH MCC Maitland City Council is joining forces with other Hunter based Councils to help residents save money on their food bills and reduce food waste. Council’s Manager Development and Environment David Simm says ‘NSW Government research has found that households across the state spend an average of $1036 a year on food that is wasted. This adds up to $2.5 billion a year across NSW and Council is hoping that with the NSW Government’s assistance, we can help reduce this’. Food is wasted when people buy more than is needed, cook too much, store food incorrectly and throw away leftovers. Residents are encouraged to take the Hunter’s Bust Your Food Bill challenge, which outlines simple changes they can make to save on their food bills and reduce food waste. ‘Throwing away food also means people are wasting time and money buying items they don’t need, wasting water and energy in the production of the food, wasting precious landfill space and increasing greenhouse gas emissions,’ said Mr Simm. The first 1000 residents across the region to sign up to the challenge will receive a free kit to help them reduce their food waste. Council staff will be signing residents up to the Bust Your Food Bills Challenge during this weekend’s Harvest Markets and Riverlights Multicultural Festival. The Harvest Markets are being held at Maitland Showground and staff will be available between 7.30am and 10.30am. The Riverlights Festival is also being held on Saturday, in the Riverside Car Park (also known as Galton’s Car Park) and staff will be available from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. If you can’t make it to either of these events visit maitland.nsw.gov.au/OurEnvironment/EducationPrograms to find out further details. This Bust Your Food Bills Challenge is supported by the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW EPA’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, funded from the waste levy. Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Dungog, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Port Stephens, Singleton and Newcastle Councils are all proud partners of the Bust Your Food Bills Challenge.
