BUT GOD... Day 5 - All your details are in Gods hands Then he became very thirsty, and he called to the Lord and said, You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant, and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised? But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi so that water came out of it. When he drank, his strength returned and he revived. Therefore he named it En-hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day. (Judges 15:18, 19 NASB) Samson, the strongest man in the Bible, had just used the jawbone of a donkey to strike down a thousand Philistines. Even by his standards that was quite a day! God had promised his mother, before Samson was born, that he would have the responsibility of rescuing his people from the Philistines (Judges 13:5). and now here he was, having just slain a thousand of them - with just the jawbone of a donkey! You would think that, after that, all doubt, all fear, all lack of faith in the ability of God to look after him and fulfil his promises would vanish. If he can enable such an unlikely prediction as the one given to Samsons mother to come to pass, then surely all doubt is now removed? But of course, thats not how human nature works! We often stress more over the details than over the big picture. Although we see God in action in terms of fulfilling his big promises, we still tend to doubt his ability in the small things. Samson had just killed 1000 Philistines (even though he wasnt leading a particularly God-honouring lifestyle), without a great deal of doubt in his mind that God would enable this to happen. But now he was thirsty and he was wondering whether God had got the resources to provide him with even a cup of water! You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant, and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised? (Judges 15:18, NASB) Even a moments pause for thought should have shown Samson how ridiculous this fear was. God had given this great deliverance - how could Samson doubt that he could give such a little thing as a cup of water? But this is human nature - we have less trouble believing that God can do something massive than we do believing that he can provide us with our basic needs such as job security, financial provision and so on. BUT GOD split the hollow place that is in Lehi, so that water came out of it. (Judges 15:19, NASB) Of course the God who was able to give Samson the strength to overcome 1000 Philistines was able to provide water to quench his thirst! But God is the God of the detail as well as the big picture. He doesnt just work to bring about the big breakthroughs in our lives, only to overlook the details. And he wants us to have confidence for the small things as much as for the big things. Dont forget, it is only from our perspective that some things are small and some things are big. From Gods perspective everything is small! “What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins ? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. (Luke 12:6, 7 NLT) Samson doubted God had noticed something as small as his thirst - and that was a seed of doubt that led quickly to entertaining bigger fears. If God cant give me water to quench my thirst, then Ill die and then the Philistines will find my body and then... and so it goes on, in a spiral of growing doubts and fears. If God doesnt help me to find the right wife or husband soon, then Ill be all alone. I wont ever have a family, all my friends will get married, have children, move on with their lives, Ill be left behind, all alone, friendless... But God is every bit as capable of providing the details in our lives as he is of creating the universe. Just because he is big enough and powerful enough to create the hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe does not mean that he overlooks our individual, everyday concerns. So have confidence that the God who has brought you safe thus far will not overlook all the details , all the things that we are so concerned about, and will finish the work he has begun. And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. (Philippians 1:6) Lord, when I become stressed out about the details in my life, the everyday needs, the things that I worry are too small for you to notice, help me to remember that even the hairs on my head are numbered. People may overlook details and not understand how important they are, BUT GOD never will. All the details, all the small stuff - you have already thought of it all, and I can trust you.
