BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO ELIJAH? ( 1Kings 19:1-14) But what happened to Elijah, the Ben Johnson of our todays text? Can this be the Elijah that was introduced to us few minutes ago? What happened that Elijah was running because of the treat of Jezebel, to the point that he abandoned his servant at Beersheba in his flight (1Kings 19:3). The Bible recorded concerning Elijah thus: But he himself went a days journey into the wilderness, and came and sat under a juniper tree and he requested for himself that he might die and said, It is enough: now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers (1Kings 19:4). What happened to the man of prayer that he became a protesting prophet? What happened that a man who used to stand before God, came to sit under a juniper tree -sulking in self pity and regrets. What meaneth Elijah when he said It Is Enough. And this was where it snapped. All the entreaties and persuasions by God to change the mind of Elijah proved abortive. He submitted his resignation letter with the bold title IT IS ENOUGH mid way into his ministry. As far as God was concerned, Elihahs ministry was a journey too great and too far. God had opened the gate of Grace and help but he refussed insisting that must leave now. Elijag was trying to use the backslidden state of Isreal to achieve his self ambition if giving up. Can a man of God become angrier than God -the Owner of the work, when he feels others are not doing enough? Elijah wrongly assumed he had payed hia dues when he started his It is enough chant. He thought he had done too much with his shutting and opening the heavens. He started beating his chest as a great achiever after the Mount Carmels triumph and the brook Kishon slaughter of the prophets of Baal. But most dangerously, the man who use to stand before God in prayer began to sit under a juniper tree to mourn, sulk and protest. He could no longer press on in the place of prayer. When prayer fails for a man of God, every other thing follows to fail. Prayer failure is a precursor to ministerial failure. That Elijah even ran because Jezebel threatened was becouse of this. PRAYER: LORD, help me never to go sit under the juniper tree of self satisfaction and prayerlessness. Oh, that I may press on in Prayer.
