BUT YOURE A MILLIONAIRE ARENT YOU? That was something a lovely - TopicsExpress

BUT YOURE A MILLIONAIRE ARENT YOU? That was something a lovely guy, a fan of our music asked me at a recent show. He was honestly shocked when I told him, No. I didnt have the heart to tell him I have a day job. I didnt want to shatter his illusion any more than I had to. To admit to working part time because I spend a lot of my free time making or performing music seems unimpressive. Leaving out all the boring bits, admin, promo, marketing, making bookings, planning and the very tedious accounts. I guess because people think if youre not making millions, on TV, or playing sell out shows that your music simply isnt any good. This is a great article. The rock and roll lifestyle is a myth. It’s dead. Maybe it existed at some point last century, but its not a reality now. Its also why I stay sober at shows. Music equipment is expensive. I cant afford to get drunk and drop something or allow for it to get nicked because I was pissed. Some of our kit represents months of hard work to pay for it. The bottom line is, we do it for the absolute love of it and the yearning need to express and create. However I dont think a lot of people realise actually how hard a life it is. When you say youre in a band, theres an expectation that youre gonna hit it big soon or youre a loser. Every new temp job I start I get shocked replies when I tell people, weve toured throughout the UK and Europe. Weve got albums on iTunes. But...you cant make a living from it.
