BWB attributes water scarcity to drying up of Mudi Dam Blantyre, November 14, 2014: The Blantyre Water Board has attributed water shortage being experienced within its water supply area to the drying up of Mudi Dam. The Board said the development has resulted in stoppage of production from Mudi Treatment Plant, consequently leading to the reduction of the total production capacity by about 10 percent. “This means that the board is currently only relying on water produced from Walkers Ferry on the Shire River to serve all areas within the water supply area,” the board has said in a statement. It added: “The situation has also been worsened by a number of shutdowns that are currently being undertaken in order to allow for replacement of old pumping equipment with new ones under the upgrading projects currently underway.” In view of this, the board said some areas will continue to experience erratic water supply as the problem has contributed to inadequate production capacity of the plant that does not meet the currently demand: “The board therefore reiterated that customers should expect the problem to continue till mid January 2015 as to when some of the projects currently underway would be commissioned. The board however, said the situation may improve earlier than the scheduled time if rains could start soon thereby ensuring adequate water levels in the Mudi Dam. “Even though, some areas shall continue experiencing low pressures others will have no water at all at times especially those in Limbe, Chiradzulu and Bvumbwe. Recently people have been flocking to industrial areas like Makata and Chirimba in search of the now scarce commodity.
