BYRON RESIDENTS’ GROUP MEDIA RELEASE 11 September 2014 Reclaim the Bay − rally against West Byron The Byron Residents’ Group is calling on all those concerned about the impact of the 1,100 houses, shopping centre and industrial area at West Byron to attend a rally on Saturday to show the Planning Minister, Pru Goward, our local member, Don Page, and would-be politicians that the community is concerned about this issue. “It is the 11th hour for our town as we are expecting the Planning Minister to make a decision on West Byron any day, so we need to send a strong message to Sydney and those seeking to represent us,” says BRG President, Cate Coorey. “As well as meeting with the Planning Minister, we have been corresponding with, and meeting, candidates for the upcoming State election in order to obtain clear and unambiguous positions on West Byron. We have invited all candidates for the State seat of Ballina to tell you their plans for West Byron. “We have been heartened by the responses from the Greens Tamara Smith and the vying ALP candidates Paul Spooner and Keith Williams, as they have all acknowledged the traffic, Koala and Acid Sulfate Soil problems, and all support the return of decision making on West Byron to Byron Shire Council. “Despite numerous correspondences and a meeting, Nationals candidate Kris Beavis has refused our repeated requests for him to state his position, going so far as to claim that it is inappropriate for any candidate to state their position before the Minister responds to the issues, which she won’t do until she announces her decision. “We have sent an invitation to Minister Goward and to Don Page to attend the rally. When we met with the Minister she told us she had never been to Byron Bay. It would be a shame for her to make a decision of such gravity and far-reaching implications without having any real sense of what that means on the ground. “The people of Byron are telling us that they feel that the town is being too heavily influenced by the state government and developer interests. We want to have a say in what happens in our town not leave it to the mercy of developers and the long arm of Macquarie Street.” RALLY AGAINST WEST BYRON OVER-DEVELOPMENT WHERE: Railway Park, Byron Bay TIME: 11:00am DATE: 20 September Media contact: Cate Coorey 0402 315 345 westbyron.org contact: byronresidentsassociation@gmail facebook/events/720746697999348/?fref=ts
