Baala Kaanda - Sarga 60 In this Sarga, Viswaamitra completes the Yagnya to send Trishnaku to heaven with the mortal body. But the Devas do not accept the invitation to receive their respective portions of the offerings. Viswaamitra gets angry. He spends all the power of Tapa that he has earned over the time to send Trishanku to heaven. But Indra and the other Devas do not accept Trishanku into heaven and he falls down from there. Viswaamitra, again, using his power of Tapa holds him in the middle and creates constellations of stars around him, equivalent to those that are already in the universe. Both the Devas and Viswaamitra come to a compromise, that Thrishnku would not enter heaven, but would stay in the heaven created by Viswaamitra as long as the universe survives. The drama of previous Sarga reaches cosmic proportions, literally, in this Sarga. The intriguing aspects of universe and its equilibrium are brought to the forefront by the story in this Sarga. Like Ksheera Sagara Madhanam and Kumara Sambhavam, this story of Trishanku also is highly symbolic and stays as a vital piece of Indian Mythology. While Ksheera Sagara Madhanam and Kumara Sambhavam speak to the evolutionary aspects of the universe, the story of Trishanku speaks to its possible fallouts. Viswaamitra steps out of the framework and even tries to abandon it with utter disregard to the laws that govern and keep it in equilibrium. 1.60.1 తపోబలహతాన్ కృత్వా వాసిష్ఠాన్ సమహోదయాన్ । ఋషిమధ్యే మహాతేజా విశ్వామిత్రో ఽభ్యభాషత ॥ tapōbalahatān kṛtvā vāsiṣṭhān samahōdayān । ṛṣimadhyē mahātējā viṡvāmitrō bhyabhāṣata ॥ After thus rendering the sons of Vasishtha and Mahodaya practically dead, the supremely radiant Viswaamitra said, in the midst of all the Rishis: 1.60.2-3a అయమిక్ష్వాకుదాయాదస్త్రిశఙ్కురితి విశ్రుతః । ధర్మిష్ఠశ్చ వదాన్యశ్చ మాం చైవ శరణం గతః । తేనానేన శరీరేణ దేవలోకజిగీషయా ॥ ayamikṣvākudāyādastriṡaṅkuriti viṡrutaḥ । dharmiṣṭhaṡca vadānyaṡca māṃ caiva ṡaraṇaṃ gataḥ । tēnānēna ṡarīrēṇa dēvalōkajigīṣayā ॥ This renowned and charitable Dhaarmika, Trishanku, born into the Ikshwaaku lineage, would like to go to heaven with mortal body. He came to me asking for help. 1.60.3b-4a యథా ఽయం స్వశరీరేణ స్వర్గలోకం గమిష్యతి । తథా ప్రవర్త్యతాం యజ్ఞో భవద్భిశ్చ మయా సహ ॥ yathā yaṃ svaṡarīrēṇa svargalōkaṃ gamiṣyati । tathā pravartyatāṃ yajñō bhavadbhiṡca mayā saha ॥ Please perform the Yagnyas along with me, that would take him to heaven with his mortal body. 1.60.4b-5a విశ్వామిత్రవచః శ్రుత్వా సర్వ ఏవ మహర్షయః । ఊచుః సమేత్య సహితా ధర్మజ్ఞా ధర్మసంహితమ్ ॥ viṡvāmitravacaḥ ṡrutvā sarva ēva maharṣayaḥ । ūcuḥ samētya sahitā dharmajñā dharmasaṃhitam ॥ Upon hearing those words of Viswaamitra, all the Maharshis who know the Dharma well, said to each other, as could be expected: 1.60.5b-6 అయం కుశికదాయాదో మునిః పరమకోపనః । యదాహ వచనం సమ్యగేతత్కార్యం న సంశయః । అగ్నికల్పో హి భగవాన్ శాపం దాస్యతి రోషితః ॥ ayaṃ kuṡikadāyādō muniḥ paramakōpanaḥ । yadāha vacanaṃ samyagētatkāryaṃ na saṃṡayaḥ । agnikalpō hi bhagavān ṡāpaṃ dāsyati rōṣitaḥ ॥ This Muni, son of Kusika is ill-tempered. We have no choice but to conform to his directives. He is very capable and like a fire, to curse us, if he gets angry. This unfortunate acquiescence of the Rishis to the will of Viswaamitra, reminds me of the scenes in some of the Indian movies, where the entire staff of a police department were humiliated by a goon politician who orders them to do whatever he wants. 1.60.7-8a తస్మాత్ప్రవర్త్యతాం యజ్ఞః సశరీరో యథా దివమ్ ॥ గచ్ఛేదిక్ష్వాకుదాయాదో విశ్వామిత్రస్య తేజసా । తథా ప్రవర్త్యతాం యజ్ఞః సర్వే సమధితిష్ఠత ॥ tasmātpravartyatāṃ yajñaḥ saṡarīrō yathā divam ॥ gacchēdikṣvākudāyādō viṡvāmitrasya tējasā । tathā pravartyatāṃ yajñaḥ sarvē samadhitiṣṭhata ॥ Hence, let us do our part in this Yagnya led by the supremely radiant Viswaamitra, that would take this scion of Ikshwaaku lineage to the heaven along with his mortal body. Let us get started. 1.60.8b-9a ఏవముక్త్వా మహర్షయః చక్రుస్తాస్తాః క్రియాస్తదా । యాజకశ్చ మహాతేజా విశ్వామిత్రో ఽభవత్ క్రతౌ ॥ ēvamuktvā maharṣayaḥ cakrustāstāḥ kriyāstadā । yājakaṡca mahātējā viṡvāmitrō bhavat kratau ॥ Discussing thus, the Maharshis started with their respective acts for the Yagnya under the supervision of Viswaamitra. 1.60.9b-10a ఋత్విజశ్చానుపూర్వ్యేణ మన్త్రవన్మన్త్రకోవిదాః । చక్రుః సర్వాణి కర్మాణి యథాకల్పం యథావిధి ॥ ṛtvijaṡcānupūrvyēṇa mantravanmantrakōvidāḥ । cakruḥ sarvāṇi karmāṇi yathākalpaṃ yathāvidhi ॥ The Ritvijas among them, who are well versed with Mantras have performed all the activities of the Yagnya as per the procedures laid out in the Saastras, in the proper order and with the proper Mantras. Once agreed, they didnt do a half-minded job. Some Braahmanas, even in this modern times, can be said to have the same level of integrity when performing rituals like weddings! But, I wish, we could say this about ALL Brahmanas! 1.60.10b-11a తతః కాలేన మహతా విశ్వామిత్రో మహాతపాః । చకారావాహనం తత్ర భాగార్థం సర్వదేవతాః ॥ tataḥ kālēna mahatā viṡvāmitrō mahātapāḥ । cakārāvāhanaṃ tatra bhāgārthaṃ sarvadēvatāḥ ॥ After performing the Yagnyas for many days, the great Tapasvi invited all the Devas to accept their respective portions of the offerings. 1.60.11b-12 నాభ్యాగమంస్తదాహూతా భాగార్థం సర్వదేవతాః ॥ తత్ర క్రోధసమావిష్టో విశ్వామిత్రో మహామునిః । స్రువముద్యమ్య సక్రోధస్త్రిశఙ్కుమిదమబ్రవీత్ ॥ nābhyāgamaṃstadāhūtā bhāgārthaṃ sarvadēvatāḥ ॥ tatra krōdhasamāviṣtō viṡvāmitrō mahāmuniḥ । sruvamudyamya sakrōdhastriṡaṅkumidamabravīt ॥ But none of the Devas accepted that invitation. Then the great Muni Viswaamitra got very angry. Then, holding up the Sruva, he said to Trishanku betraying all his anger: Sruva is a ladel like implement used for pouring ghee into the Homa Kunda. As you all might, I can think of several parallels for this in our modern times. Sometimes, an executive in a corporation would be hell bent on promoting a certain person, who was earlier rejected by others just so that he demonstrate his power. The Devas not accepting the invitation is like a senior leadership team or board of directors not showing up the meeting where the proposal for the promotion was announced. 1.60.13-14a పశ్య మే తపసో వీర్యం స్వార్జితస్య నరేశ్వర । ఏష త్వాం సశరీరేణ నయామి స్వర్గమోజసా । దుష్ప్రాపం స్వశరీరేణ దివం గచ్ఛ నరాధిప ॥ paṡya mē tapasō vīryaṃ svārjitasya narēṡvara । ēṣa tvāṃ saṡarīrēṇa nayāmi svargamōjasā । duṣprāpaṃ svaṡarīrēṇa divaṃ gaccha narādhipa ॥ O ruler of the people! See what I am going to do with the power I gained through my own Tapa! With my radiant power, I am going to send you to heaven. Go to the heaven with your mortal body, a thing that is next to impossible! 1.60.14b-15a స్వార్జితం కిఞ్చిదప్యస్తి మయా హి తపసఃఫలమ్ । రాజన్ స్వతేజసా తస్య సశరీరో దివం వ్రజ ॥ svārjitaṃ kiñcidapyasti mayā hi tapasaḥphalam । rājan svatējasā tasya saṡarīrō divaṃ vraja ॥ O King! Whatever power of Tapa that I earned on my own, is with me. Use it all and go to heaven with your mortal body. Reminds me the boasting of former President of United States: George W. Bush, who said something like: I earned a lot of political capital and I like to spend it!, before going to war on Iraq. The consequences are all too well known to discuss. 1.60.15b-16a ఉక్తవాక్యే మునౌ తస్మిన్ సశరీరో నరేశ్వరః । దివం జగామ కాకుత్స్థ మునీనాం పశ్యతాం తదా ॥ uktavākyē munau tasmin saṡarīrō narēṡvaraḥ । divaṃ jagāma kākutstha munīnāṃ paṡyatāṃ tadā ॥ O prince of Kaakutstha lineage! Just as the Muni was saying those words, the ruler of people (Trishanku) went to heaven as all the Munis were watching in awe! 1.60.16b-17a దేవలోకగతం దృష్ట్వా త్రిశఙ్కుం పాకశాసనః । సహ సర్వైః సురగణైరిదం వచనమబ్రవీత్ ॥ dēvalōkagataṃ dṛṣtvā triṡaṅkuṃ pākaṡāsanaḥ । saha sarvaiḥ suragaṇairidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥ Seeing that Trishanku coming to the heaven, Indra, along with all the Suras, said: 1.60.17b-18a త్రిశఙ్కో గచ్ఛ భూయస్త్వం నాసి స్వర్గకృతాలయః । గురుశాపహతో మూఢ పత భూమిమవాక్ఛిరాః ॥ triṡaṅkō gaccha bhūyastvaṃ nāsi svargakṛtālayaḥ । guruṡāpahatō mūḍha pata bhūmimavākchirāḥ ॥ O Trishanku! Foolish you, who earned the curse of a Guru! You dont belong here! May you fall back to the earth with your head down! 1.60.18b-19a ఏవముక్తో మహేన్ద్రేణ త్రిశఙ్కురపతత్పునః । విక్రోశమానస్త్రాహీతి విశ్వామిత్రం తపోధనమ్ ॥ ēvamuktō mahēndrēṇa triṡaṅkurapatatpunaḥ । vikrōṡamānastrāhīti viṡvāmitraṃ tapōdhanam ॥ With those words of Mahendra, Trishanku started falling down, crying loudly for help from Viswamitra, the one rich with Tapa. 1.60.19b-20a తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా వచనం తస్య క్రోశమానస్య కౌశికః । రోషమాహారయత్తీవ్రం తిష్ఠ తిష్ఠేతి చాబ్రవీత్॥ tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya krōṡamānasya kauṡikaḥ । rōṣamāhārayattīvraṃ tiṣṭha tiṣṭhēti cābravīt॥ Hearing those cries for help, the son of Kusika felt very angry and said: Hold on there, Hold on there! 1.60.20b-22a ఋషిమధ్యే స తేజస్వీ ప్రజాపతిరివాపరః । సృజన్ దక్షిణమార్గస్థాన్ సప్తర్షీనపరాన్ పునః ॥ నక్షత్రమాలామపరామసృజత్ క్రోధమూర్చ్ఛితః । దక్షిణాం దిశమాస్థాయ మునిమధ్యే మహాయశాః ॥ ṛṣimadhyē sa tējasvī prajāpatirivāparaḥ । sṛjan dakṣiṇamārgasthān saptarṣīnaparān punaḥ ॥ nakṣatramālāmaparāmasṛjat krōdhamūrcchitaḥ । dakṣiṇāṃ diṡamāsthāya munimadhyē mahāyaṡāḥ ॥ O Rama! As all those Rishis were watching, as if he were another Brahma, the outraged Viswaamitra created another Saptarshi Mandala and all other constellations of stars in the southern hemisphere. Saptarshi Mandala refers to the seven bright well known stars, that are also known as Big Dipper, which is part of Ursa Major constellation. I cant help continuing the analogy in todays context. The adamant executive promoted him. But the senior leadership didnt quite accept him and pushed him down. Then the adamant executive gives him another office and staff, spending all his political will and budget. 1.60.22b-23 సృష్ట్వా నక్షత్రవంశం చ క్రోధేన కలుషీకృతః । అన్యమిన్ద్రం కరిష్యామి లోకో వా స్యాదనిన్ద్రకః । దైవతాన్యపి స క్రోధాత్ స్రష్టుం సముపచక్రమే ॥ sṛṣtvā nakṣatravaṃṡaṃ ca krōdhēna kaluṣīkṛtaḥ । anyamindraṃ kariṣyāmi lōkō vā syādanindrakaḥ । daivatānyapi sa krōdhāt sraṣtuṃ samupacakramē ॥ After creating families of stars, blinded by rage, he said: I will create another Indra or I may even make the world devoid of Indra and started to create new Devas also. Let us continue with our parallel. Imagine our adamant executive to be the head of sales, under whose regime the company saw stellar sales for over a decade. His star would be apparently on the rise. And no one can quite pull themselves together to say ‘no’ to him. But at the same time, they cannot accept his moves. Imagine, that executive, then attempting to move the pawns to change the Board of Directors themselves. 1.60.24 తతః పరమసమ్భ్రాన్తాః సర్షిసఙ్ఘాః సురాసురాః । విశ్వామిత్రం మహాత్మానమూచుః సానునయం వచః ॥ tataḥ paramasambhrāntāḥ sarṣisaṅghāḥ surāsurāḥ । viṡvāmitraṃ mahātmānamūcuḥ sānunayaṃ vacaḥ ॥ Then, all the Rishis, Suras and Asuras got astounded and horrified and said these words of compromise to that Mahatma Viswaamitra: 1.60.25 అయం రాజా మహాభాగ గురుశాపపరిక్షతః । సశరీరో దివం యాతుం నార్హత్యేహ తపోధన ॥ ayaṃ rājā mahābhāga guruṡāpaparikṣataḥ । saṡarīrō divaṃ yātuṃ nārhatyēha tapōdhana ॥ O Tapasvi! O blessed one! This king, who had earned the curse of the Guru cannot enter heaven with his mortal body. 1.60.26 తేషాం తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా దేవానాం మునిపుఙ్గవః । అబ్రవీత్ సుమహద్వాక్యం కౌశికః సర్వదేవతాః ॥ tēṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā dēvānāṃ munipuṅgavaḥ । abravīt sumahadvākyaṃ kauṡikaḥ sarvadēvatāḥ ॥ Hearing those words of all the Devas, the foremost among Munis, the son of Kusika, replied in a haughty language: 1.60.27 సశరీరస్య భద్రం వస్త్రిశఙ్కోరస్య భూపతేః । ఆరోహణం ప్రతిజ్ఞాయ నానృతం కర్తుముత్సహే ॥ saṡarīrasya bhadraṃ vastriṡaṅkōrasya bhūpatēḥ । ārōhaṇaṃ pratijñāya nānṛtaṃ kartumutsahē ॥ I dont want my words of sending this king, Trishanku, to heaven go to naught. May all bode well for you! How did this universe come into being? What are the laws and rules governing it? What is possible and impossible in this universe? What is the meaning of creation and expansion? How did something come from nothing? What does it take for anything to come into being? How does it effect the equilibrium of the universe? What is the meaning of dissolution ? What forms and properties develop spontaneously at the time of creation? What properties simply happen to become manifested from the unmanifested state ? How much of the unmanifested can be known by the manifested? These are the concerns that our ancient Rishes contemplated upon and got absorbed with. Stories like that of Viswaamitra has this magical capability to lift us to the relams of that kind of thinking. ------------------ Viswamitra gained a tremondous amount of energy through Tapa. He is like Black Hole, to use a term from the modern astronomy. He is spewing it as new constellations that were never there before. And, that is of concern to the Devas, who job is to protect the equilibrium of the Universe. (As a matter of fact, on the day of Vaikhunta Ekadasi, which we celebrate every year, the Devas come from the north, to report to their Lord, Vishnu, that everything is in equilibrium!) Now, the Devas are facing the challenge of accommodating Viswaamitras creation, without any disturbance to the equilibrium of the existing creation. The term Vaiswaanara in Sloka 31 refers to the fundamentals of the structure of the universe as visuzlized by the sages as having four parts, three of them being unmanifest and one of them being manifest. (Mandukyopanishad describes this specific abstraction of the Universe.) ------------------ Again, the symbolism is so strong here, that we cannot but continue with our parallel to this, in terms of dynamics at the top echelons of the management in modern corporations. What Viswaamitra did, amounts to creating a parallel business unit within the company. What Suras did, amounts to Board of Directors spinning it of as a separate business. 1.60.28-29 స్వర్గో ఽస్తు సశరీరస్య త్రిశఙ్కోరస్య శాశ్వతః । నక్షత్రాణి చ సర్వాణి మామకాని ధ్రువాణ్యథ ॥ యావల్లోకా ధరిష్యన్తి తిష్ఠన్త్వేతాని సర్వశః । మత్కృతాని సురాః సర్వే తదనుజ్ఞాతుమర్హథ ॥ svargō stu saṡarīrasya triṡaṅkōrasya ṡāṡvataḥ । nakṣatrāṇi ca sarvāṇi māmakāni dhruvāṇyatha ॥ yāvallōkā dhariṣyanti tiṣṭhantvētāni sarvaṡaḥ । matkṛtāni surāḥ sarvē tadanujñātumarhatha ॥ O Suras! May this Trishanku be in heaven forever, with his mortal body! May all these constellations of stars that I created stay there forever, as long as all these worlds survive! And I hope you all would be agreeable with this! 1.60.30-32a ఏవముక్తాః సురాః సర్వే ప్రత్యూచుర్మునిపుఙ్గవమ్ ॥ ఏవం భవతు భద్రం తే తిష్ఠన్త్వేతాని సర్వశః । గగనే తాన్యనేకాని వైశ్వానరపథాద్బహిః ॥ నక్షత్రాణి మునిశ్రేష్ఠ తేషు జ్యోతిష్షు జాజ్వలన్ । అవాక్ఛిరాస్త్రిశఙ్కుశ్చ తిష్ఠత్వమరసన్నిభః ॥ ēvamuktāḥ surāḥ sarvē pratyūcurmunipuṅgavam ॥ ēvaṃ bhavatu bhadraṃ tē tiṣṭhantvētāni sarvaṡaḥ । gaganē tānyanēkāni vaiṡvānarapathādbahiḥ ॥ nakṣatrāṇi muniṡrēṣṭha tēṣu jyōtiṣṣu jājvalan । avākchirāstriṡaṅkuṡca tiṣṭhatvamarasannibhaḥ ॥ To those words of the foremost among Munis, all of the Devas responded by saying: O foremost of the Munis! May all of these multiple star constellations stay forever in the space, outside of the regular universe. May the Trishanku, with his head downwards, stay glowing among them, like another Deva! 1.60.32b-33a అనుయాస్యన్తి చైతాని జ్యోతీంషి నృపసత్తమమ్ । కృతార్థం కీర్తిమన్తఞ్చ స్వర్గలోకగతం తథా ॥ anuyāsyanti caitāni jyōtīṃṣi nṛpasattamam । kṛtārthaṃ kīrtimantañca svargalōkagataṃ tathā ॥ These star constellations would follow him just as if he has ascended to heaven! May this great king thus become renowned and have his wish fulfilled! 1.60.33b-34a విశ్వామిత్రస్తు ధర్మాత్మా సర్వదేవైరభిష్టుతః । ఋషిభిశ్చ మహాతేజా బాఢమిత్యాహ దేవతాః ॥ viṡvāmitrastu dharmātmā sarvadēvairabhiṣtutaḥ । ṛṣibhiṡca mahātējā bāḍhamityāha dēvatāḥ ॥ The supremely radiant Dharmaatma, Viswaamitra applauded by the Rishis and Devas said: May it be so! 1.60.34 తతో దేవా మహాత్మానో మునయశ్చ తపోధనాః । జగ్ముర్యథాగతం సర్వే యజ్ఞస్యాన్తే నరోత్తమ ॥ tatō dēvā mahātmānō munayaṡca tapōdhanāḥ । jagmuryathāgataṃ sarvē yajñasyāntē narōttama ॥ O best among the men (Raama)! Then, all the Mahaatma Devas, and all the Munis who are rich with Tapa left to their respective places, as that Yagnya has drawn to a close. ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయే ఆదికావ్యే శ్రీమద్బాలకాణ్డే షష్టితమః సర్గః ॥ ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē ṡrīmadbālakāṇḍē ṣaṣtitamaḥ sargaḥ ॥ Thus concludes the sixtieth Sarga in Baala Kaanda of Vaalmeeki Ramayana. We completed reading 1770 Slokas out of ~24,000 Slokas of Vaalmeeki Raamayana.
