Baby stolen from Groote Schuur returned to mom SAFE in the arms of his mother after being abducted from Groote Schuur Hosptial’s maternity ward on New Year’s Day, baby Baxolile Sem-Sem yawned slowly and stretched his tiny arms as he fell asleep. Oblivious to his three siblings, aunts and neighbours surrounding him, Baxolile was the centre of attention at his home in TR informal Settlement Khayelitsha yesterday. He was snatched while sleeping in a cot next to his mother in the maternity ward between 2am and 3am of New Year’s Day. The maternity unit has 12 security staff stationed throughout the ward and is fitted with CCTV cameras. Police quickly traced his abductor to the Nkanini informal settlement in Harare on Friday where a 24-year-old suspect was arrested. She will appear in court today. Yesterday Nomveliso Sem-Sem smiled and kissed her son’s cheeks as she recalled the moment she discovered he was missing. “I was sleeping when a nurse woke me up and asked where my baby was. “I thought he was with the nurse.” But after the nurse made a quick search of the maternity ward both realised that the infant was gone. “I was terrified and kept searching. “It was a nightmare, no one could sleep or eat and we all just cried.” Story: Natasha Bezuidenhout / Photographs: David Ritchie (Read the full story in todays Cape Argus or get the app at myindependent.co.za)
